Commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant

Sunderland City Council is proud to have signed the Armed Forces Covenant and to be a Gold Award holder. We work in collaboration with our partners in Sunderland Armed Forces Partnership to ensure we are a Forces Friendly City recognising the huge contribution and skills that serving personnel, reservists, veterans and military families can bring to our workforce.

We are an Armed Forces friendly organisation, we have a Reserve and Cadet Force Adult Volunteering Policy and offer flexible working opportunities such as compressed hours, part-year working, shorter working days, career breaks and the ability to buy additional leave.  We also have an employee health and wellbeing programme and free counselling services for staff.

About us

Sunderland is a fantastic, forward-looking, ambitious city undergoing significant transformation and economic regeneration. From the seafront and the city centre, to building locations of national strategic significance, we are creating the very best conditions for our 280,000 residents who live here and those who come to the city to work.

Sunderland City Council provides a huge variety of services across the city, currently employing approximately 2,500 people in a variety of roles ranging from gardeners to building maintenance technicians, ICT experts to social workers and many more. At all levels we work together to achieve real change across the city.

Sunderland is one of the few cities in the UK to be situated on the coast, whilst benefitting from easy access to the countryside, a short drive from two international airports, direct rail access to London and less than a twenty-minute drive from Durham and Newcastle.

Sunderland is a great place to work. Wherever you’re coming from, you’ll discover a place – and people – that will make you feel at home.
