Finding A Job – Things to Think About
Whether this is your first job search or you’ve lost count of the numbers, here are a few top tips which will hopefully help you as a military partner find the right job for you.
Take time to understand what you want from your next job
- Reflect on your strengths, skills and personal values
- Consider more than just the salary and job title
- Think about the role, company and culture that would suit you
- What do you want to be doing in 5 years’ time? What job will help you achieve your goal?
Understand what will work for you
- As a military partner, know your service person’s schedule – will the military tempo of their role keep them away from home, have short notice changes or allow for more family time (and help with school/nursery times for example)
- You may be in a remote location – will you be able to get to work easily (by car or public transport) or do you need to explore options for working from home
- Be realistic with what you can commit to, so that if you find yourself flying solo during a deployment/exercise, your work will not be impacted
- Set boundaries that allow you to carry the workload and maintain your mental and physical wellbeing.
- Do your research on your new location, explore the job market.
Review your social media and networks
- Check your social media – employers will! Make sure there is nothing that might show you in a bad light
- Make sure your personal email address is work appropriate
- Create or update your LinkedIn profile, and use it to connect with people in sectors you’d like to work in
- Connect with local networks and your community
Create a winning CV
- Give your CV a makeover
- Highlight relevant skills and experience
- Make sure your CV and LinkedIn profile align
- Tailor your CV to each job you apply for
Prepare for a successful interview
- Research the employer
- Research common interview questions and prepare your answers
- Practice answering interview questions that showcase your skills
- Prepare some insightful questions to ask them
Stay open-minded and positive
- Be positive and flexible in your search
- Celebrate small wins
- Learn from rejections
- Never give up!
