Based at Mason Unit, Southmead Hospital you will work within a Nurse led unit and be required to receive members of the public detained on Section 136 or a section 135 of the Mental Health Act, by the local Constabulary, from the areas of Bristol, South Glos and North Somerset.
The unit is a nurse led fast paced environment. we are seeking individuals who are confident, enthusiastic in supporting the development of the unit. The service has been focusing on improving service user experiences and is keen to promote least restrictive practices.
As an RMN in a 24 hour care service, working a shift pattern is mandatory as is working some weekends and bank holidays. This role also involves managing aggressive/challenging behaviours so candidates must be physically fit to complete our Prevention and management of violence and aggression course which is provided upon appointment.
We offer in House, Trust and Partnership agency training opportunities and actively encourage staff to develop their skills and knowledge. You will receive regular supervision with your allocated supervisor and the unit provides regular reflective practice and group supervision sessions run by our colleagues from the psychology department. We are a diverse and supportive team and prioritise the well being of our colleagues.
Main duties of the job
We are an ageless service and accept service users of all ages with varying mental health needs. Your role will be to support these individuals through the assessment process, assessing physical needs, mental health needs and contributing to liaison, information gathering and assessment by the appointed team.
You will be skilled in dynamic risk assessment and be able to adapt your nursing skills in order to manage these risks to maintain the safety of your service users and colleagues.

- Manage staff effectively and efficiently on shift.
- Demonstrate effectively risk assessment and management.
- complete comprehensive documentation of risk and mental state
- Ensure physical well being is maintained on the unit, including administrating medication when prescribed.
- Utilise quality nursing skills; CBT, DBT, de-escalation and motivational interviewing.
- Co-ordinate emergency situations on the unit including medical and psychiatric emergencies.
- Communicate clearly and effectively to the wider multi-agency team.
