About the Department

Transmission operates under licence as Scottish Hydro Electric (SHE) Transmission plc, responsible for the transmission of electricity in the north of Scotland. We own and maintain the 132kV, 275kV and 400kV electricity transmission network in our licence area. Our network comprises of underground cables, overhead wooden poles, steel towers and electricity substations, and it extends over a quarter of the UK land mass across some of its most challenging terrain.

What is the Role?

The Transmission Offshore Delivery Team is responsible for delivering our approved connection from the Scottish mainland to the Shetland Isles. The project scope includes the construction of an HVDC converter station, AC substation and 10km of underground HVDC cables on the Shetland mainland. On the Scottish mainland an HVDC Switching Station and 2.5km of land cables and jointing will establish a multi-terminal HVDC system with the existing Caithness-Moray HVDC Link. To help deliver this investment, we are looking for an experienced land cables Construction Manager.

Located initially on site at Upper Kergord, Shetland, and then at Noss Head near Wick on the mainland, the Construction Manager will work closely with the HVDC cables management team formed of SHE Transmission and the appointed cables contractor. Some travel to the project office in Inverness will also be required on an infrequent basis.

Responsible for ensuring site activities comply with planning consents and SHE legislation, you'll liaise with SSE staff and contractors, helping to maximise project team effort. You will need to be able to proactively recognise and mitigate safety, environmental and quality issues. As a great communicator, you'll develop effective relationships with contractors, suppliers and the community.

You'll ensure the project is executed in accordance with relevant requirements, particularly relating to statutory and legal obligations, Health and Safety, Construction (Design and Management) Regulations, Quality & technical compliance, personnel and industrial relations. This will include facilitating safety and progress meetings and ensuring routine reports and KPI's are submitted as directed by the Project Manager.

What do I need to apply?

You should have previous experience of construction health and safety legislation practices and be experienced in all aspects of major cross-country electricity cables installation. Being a good organiser and communicator, you'll be confident challenging others. You should also have experience of resolving conflicts and planning site activities.

You should have previous supervisory or management experience preferably with a recognised trade and/or hold an ONC qualification or equivalent. In addition, you should be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation and CDM 2015 regulations.
