Job description for Salvage Diver
DE&S, Salvage and Marine Operations, are the lead across the MoD for the provision of marine salvage and emergency response. Our team of specialists including Master Mariners, Marine Engineers, Naval Architects, Environmental Scientists, ROV Pilots and Divers provide a centre of expertise for subsea activities and marine operations. Our operations are varied and include: salvage assistance to damaged surface vessels, location of aircraft on the sea-bottom, survey of WWII wrecks, towage of warships and submarines, emergency response preparedness exercises and underwater engineering support to rectify defects on Navy platforms at home and overseas. We are a flexible, highly trained and multi-skilled team who are ready to respond at short notice worldwide. We provide very exciting opportunities for global travel, recently sending our experienced team on deployments including Singapore, Japan and Bahrain!
Are you are an experienced surface supplied diver with an interest in the field of marine salvage operations?

The SALMO team at the Marine Salvage Units in Devonport are looking for experienced divers to act as our diving safety focal point, and be responsible for the day to day management of all aspects of diving maintenance both ashore and afloat.
Building on your proven background and qualifications in surface supplied diving, DE&S will provide you with the necessary training and help you on your journey to becoming an experienced salvage operator underwater.
In addition to your core role and responsibilities as a diver, supervisor, maintainer, you will have the opportunity to support all other areas of SALMO, as and when required. This may be in the form of underwater engineering support, welding/tooling, seabed survey and ROV. There may also be the opportunity for regular deployments within the UK, abroad and afloat, leading as a focal point of the dive team, instilling best practice in operations as well as the shore-based management role.
Responsibilities for Salvage Diver
Acting as the diving safety focal point you will be responsible for the day to day management of all aspects of diving maintenance both ashore and afloat.
Duties include equipment preparation, operational planning and documentation, and ensuring safe systems of work for diving operations. You will also manage HSE regulation and system maintenance plus the associated reviews.
As part of your role you will undertake Diving related Risk Assessments.
There is a Safety Delegation associated with this post, which requires the ongoing development and maintenance of the Safety Case, standard operating procedures and safety management systems.
You may on occasion, be called upon to engage in other diverse activity to support both SALMO and wider Defence outputs.
This Assignment is subject to Retained Grade Terms and Conditions.
The Terms and conditions within the SALMO team differ from the DE&S standard TACOS and are detailed in the SALMO Retained Grade handbook.
In order to be successful in this role you must be fit to pass and maintain
• a 2 yearly ENG1 seafarers medical (Unrestricted)
• HSE Diving Medical
This Assignment is open to sole UK Nationals only
You will be required to enlist as a Royal Navy Sponsored Reserve
You will be expected to work overtime as and when required in support of operational commitments.
You will be required to live within 60 minutes travelling time of the base to which you are appointed.
The post requires you to have an in date current UK Driving Licence
If you have no prior commercial diving experience, you will also be required to undertake a dive aptitude test which will be funded by SALMO.
What you will be assessed against
To be found successful you must demonstrate the following essential criteria:
• HSE Surface Supplied Air Diver OR Royal Navy equivalent qualification
• ADC Inland/Inshore Diving Supervisor (or experience to immediately enrol on the ADC supervisors’ scheme
It would benefit your application should you be able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:
• Underwater/topside welding experience, cutting, burning UW tooling experience.
• KM maintainers/Military diving equipment maintainer
• IMCA Dive Systems Auditor
• Diver Medic Technician
• Relevant experience in Marine Ops &/or Salvage Experience
