Design Manager

Job Description

Design Manager
SF35668
Devonport Royal Dockyard, Plymouth
£50,510 - £56,665

About the role
Here at Babcock, we are looking for a Design Manager to join our team at HMNB Devonport, which is one of the largest naval bases in Western Europe. We're a key strategic partner to our customers; the MOD and the Royal Navy. We ensure that the UK Royal Navy goes to sea safely by supporting them in Devonport and around the world, delivering complex ship and submarine sustainment programmes. We apply our core strengths of technology and expertise to sustain critical and complex assets to help maintain national security.

The Design Management Group manages the development and delivery of complex design solutions within safety critical facilities, to quality, time and budget. Due to the regulatory framework in which we work, the application of Babcock's Business Management System is key. There is a need for Design Managers, operating at both Principal and Senior Engineer levels, to manage the delivery of assigned single, and multi-disciplinary, design projects to the required scope, quality standards, schedule and cost.

As a Design Manager, you will be responsible for managing the technical aspects of a project, from identification of the need through to handover, acting as the Technical Authority single point of contact, organising and leading resources as the project demands. The Facilities Engineering Technical Authority sits within Engineering Services and provides key analysis, advice and engineering outputs to the Facility Design Authorities for both Nuclear and Non-Nuclear facilities within HMNB Devonport. The provision of safe, available and capable facilities is at the heart of what we do, and without these services the delivery of the submarine and warship upkeep programmes would not be possible.

The Design Management Group is a key customer facing department within Facilities Engineering. The demands on our facilities are constantly changing, as the pursuit of modern safety standards and changing requirements drives the need for revised and enhanced engineering solutions. This is an exciting opportunity to join a developing part of the business undergoing significant transformation to support the Devonport Facilities requirements of Future Maritime Support Programme.

What do I need to do the role?
You will hold a Degree in a STEM subject (or be able to demonstrate equivalent experience) and be registered as a Chartered/Incorporated Engineer. If not registered then you should be able to evidence that you are working towards this, along with holding membership of a relevant professional institution.

You will have a strong technical background and demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills due to the levels of stakeholder management required by the role. You will have a sound understanding of designing and substantiating solutions for safety-critical applications, gained ideally from the nuclear or other regulated industry. In addition, you have experience of the design lifecycle and a logical approach to problem solving.

What else do I need to know?
* The successful candidate will need to satisfy Ministry of Defence security requirements. This may require you to hold or be eligible/capable of achieving 'Security Check' (SC) clearance.
* We are happy to talk about flexible working. Please ask about alternative patterns of work at interview.
