Summary

As the Engineering Apprenticeship team leader you will recruit, on-board, and develop the apprentices, identifying suitable placement opportunities (both internal and external) and preparing them for their end point assessment. There is extensive external involvement both with our training provider, Wiltshire College, and during the development of external placements.

This role is very dynamic and there is a great deal of personal investment to ensure that each individual reaches their potential and successfully completes the apprenticeship.

The role of Team Leader of the Engineering Apprenticeship can be challenging and tremendously rewarding. In this respect it would be beneficial that the applicant has experience with managing early careers.

Job description

In this role you will
• Develop & sustain capability (people relationships, infrastructure, knowledge) to provide technical contribution to current and future delivery and projects across Operations and Dstl through effective use of the Team's resources/expertise:
o Maintain awareness of current and future demand requirements
o Understand and use the different resource options to ensure an appropriate mix of team members
o Understand and effectively develop capability to align with Division Capability plans
o Build resilience through succession planning, including developing future leaders

• Direct Line management of a team:
o Enable effective performance management and development of team members
o Allocate employees to tasks or projects based on requirements
o Coach and support team member’s career and personal development

• Ensure that people have the necessary skills and competencies for the tasks assigned

• Ensure employees have knowledge of and conform to all safety and security and resilience requirements

• Build employee engagement and create an environment which nurtures excellence through:
o Setting the direction for the team, including how the team fits with strategic aims
o Creating a positive and inclusive working environment that aligns with Dstl Values, champions diversity and enables employees to excel
o Communicating and owning difficult messages
o Challenging and addressing poor performance
o Recognising and highlighting high performance
o Networking with other Team Leaders and stakeholders to share good practice and ensure a coherent approach

• Implement Dstl's policies and ensure compliance with the Management System

• Provide individual professional leadership contribution as agreed with Line Manager.

This role will require full UK security clearance and you should have resided in the UK for the past 5 years.

• Experience/knowledge of electrical and mechanical engineering

• Experience/ Understanding of Safeguarding within the context of Early Careers
