What does the Submarine Electricity Cable Team do?

Fifty-nine Scottish islands are currently connected to the electricity network that serves mainland Great Britain by SSEN Distribution's submarine electricity cables. There are 112 submarine electricity cables totalling over 450kM.

The Submarine Electricity Cable team is responsible for monitoring the efficiency and integrity of the submarine electricity cable network powering the islands, including the Inner and Outer Hebrides, Arran, Shetland and the Orkney Islands.

A number of our submarine electricity cable assets are nearing the end of their operational and economical life. We are currently undertaking a significant programme of investment to replace around 90km of submarine cables by 2023 - a fifth of the total number currently in operation - to ensure a safe, secure and reliable supply of electricity to homes and businesses across the Scottish islands.

What is the Role?

You will be responsible for the project and commercial leadership of the Subsea Cables development projects including the CAPEX delivery programme for RIIO-ED1, which runs to 2023 and developing a robust delivery programme for inclusion in our next business plan, RIIO-ED2 which will set our investment plans from 2023 to 2028.

This will include providing leadership for the Development and Construction phases and safety strategy of the project portfolio. You'll bring together multidisciplinary teams to develop an overarching project strategy to deliver efficient projects, delivered on time and on budget.

You will use your stakeholder management skills to work collaboratively with a diverse range of internal and external parties ensuring that each project remains aligned with the SSE governance framework process.

In addition, you will develop and implement the supply chain strategy that supports each project's success. You'll take the lead in negotiations and build mutually beneficial and positive relationships with key supply chain leaders.

What do I need?

A track record of delivering as a Project Manager or Director on high value infrastructure projects and have substantial knowledge of a subsea/marine environment preferably within UK waters.

You'll have a comprehensive understanding of Safety, Health and Environment (SHE), quality management, risk management, project scheduling and an excellent understanding of the process for capital project development and construction.

You'll drive a culture of commercially-focused delivery with significant experience of contract development and negotiation and have a strong knowledge of finance with an emphasis on bank financing.

In addition, you will have excellent leadership, communication and interpersonal skills. You'll have a passion for developing talent, be comfortable engaging with key stakeholders across all levels of the business, including joint ventures, and have demonstrable experience leading multidisciplinary teams to project success.

It is an essential requirement for this role that you have a full, current driving licence.
