About Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks
Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) forms part of the FTSE-50 energy company, SSE. Our electricity distribution and transmission networks carry electricity to over 3.8 million homes and businesses across the north of Scotland and central southern England.
SSEN's core purpose is to provide a safe, efficient and reliable supply of electricity to the communities we serve. Our teams across the country manage, maintain and operate over 130,000km of overhead lines and underground cables, in addition to over 100 subsea cables which power remote island communities and provide strategically important electricity links in rural Scotland.
In line with our regulated business plan, submitted every five years, we have a responsibility to ensure the timely and efficient delivery of major capital investment programme to improve the resilience and reliability of our network and deliver leading services for customers.
What does the Submarine Electricity Cable Team do?
Fifty-nine Scottish islands are currently connected to the electricity network that serves mainland Great Britain by SSEN Distribution's submarine electricity cables. There are 112 submarine electricity cables totalling over 450kM.
The Submarine Electricity Cable team is responsible for monitoring the efficiency and integrity of the submarine electricity cable network powering the islands, including the Inner and Outer Hebrides, Arran, Shetland and the Orkney Islands.
A number of our submarine electricity cable assets are nearing the end of their operational and economical life. We are currently undertaking a significant programme of investment to replace around 90km of submarine cables by 2023 - a fifth of the total number currently in operation - to ensure a safe, secure and reliable supply of electricity to homes and businesses across the Scottish islands.
