About the Department

Operations are responsible for keeping the lights on; we are at the front line on the Network. If we find a fault, it is our responsibility to respond to the fault, and dispatch our skilled teams to fix it as quickly as possible. We work in all hours, and through all weathers, ensuring our customers are never without power.

What is the Role?

As Lead Protection and Control Engineer, you'll play a key role within SSEN helping to shape future strategy in the specialist areas of Protection & Control. Working closely with the policy teams and Technical Authorities including National Grid, Contractors, Manufacturers and other key partners in the supply chain you'll procure and manage specialist engineering contractors to ensure safety, quality and value for money.

You'll be responsible for ensuring plant and equipment operability and providing guidance to projects from inception through to handover to Operations. You will manage quality reviews of projects and be responsible for managing the in-house test and repair facility. You'll also ensure all plant and equipment information is recorded and added to the asset database.

What do I need?

To be successful, you'll have a sound knowledge of the Distribution business and understand the technical and safety requirements of an electricity network, including outage management. You'll hold an Engineering Degree, have extensive experience working within an engineering environment and have technical knowledge in the fields of Protection & Control is essential.

You should be commercially astute and have experience delivering projects and understand the associated procurement, contractor and network management involved. You will be comfortable delivering within challenging timescales and be able to effectively prioritize, plan and balance immediate and long-term business priorities.

With experience working within an incentive driven and regulated business you will understand the price control challenges facing the Distribution business and the need to continually exceed targets - and in-depth knowledge of statutory, regulatory and licensed requirements would be a distinct advantage.
