Job Description

The Adult Education Service is part of Coventry City Council.  We provide a wide range of courses for Coventry residents age 19+ and much of our provision is targeted at people with the highest levels of need. 

We offer long courses in English, maths, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), ICT/Digital and vocational subjects such as Early Years, along with provision for adults with learning disabilities.  

We also offer a very wide range of short community courses in arts, crafts, music, dance, exercise, and family learning.  In addition, we run a highly supportive study programme for young people.

Our work-based learning offer includes Apprenticeships in the following subject areas: 

  • Nursery Workers
  • Teaching Assistants
  • Leadership/Management; and 
  • Business Administration 

We also provide courses for adults who are seeking work via the Council's Job Shop. 

Our main base is at Southfields Old School, CV1 5EJ, with provision delivered at around 25 other sites within Coventry, mostly in areas of highest need.

What is the job role?

Full time fixed term until 31st August 2025

The Adult Education Service is positioned in the Skills, Employment & Adult Education team within the Council's Regeneration and Economy Directorate. The strategic intent of the service is to maximise the employability of adults, so they can progress into work, further learning/training, or engage in voluntary, social and community activities.

The Service is seeking a tutor with relevant skills, knowledge and experience to design, plan, deliver and report on Business Administration programmes. These will include (non)accredited courses taught online and/or face-to-face in a range of community settings within the city. Initially, the role will focus on the delivery of Business Administration Apprenticeships in partnership with Coventry & Warwickshire NHS Partnership Trust. Provision will be delivered during the daytime, evening and at weekends, throughout the year, to meet identified needs.

This post is exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and as such appointment to this post will be conditional upon the receipt of a satisfactory response to a check of police records via Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

Who are we looking for?

An experienced adult educator with relevant skills, knowledge and experience to design, plan, deliver and report on Business Administration programmes.

You will have up to date knowledge of curriculum practice and issues, and relevant teaching experience within a community-based adult education context in the specified subject area. You will need to demonstrate the ability to deliver an (in)formal, culturally competent, and inclusive curriculum to raise aspirations and make a difference to residents from diverse backgrounds within the city.  

You will have experience of setting individual targets and evaluating learner progress and achievements through accredited and non-accredited provision. You must evidence a good understanding of equity and inclusion, safeguarding and Prevent and be proactive in relation to safeguarding young people and vulnerable adults.

You will have the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to a range of audiences and have the skills to promote Adult Education provision using a range of methods, including social media.

You should have English and Maths qualification at Level 2, a teaching qualification at Level 3. A subject specification qualification at Level 4 or equivalent is also desirable. The ability and willingness to teach in a range of venues within in the city, and throughout the year, is important.
