Here at Serco we are looking for an experienced Librarian to join us at HMP Dovegate. Reporting into the Learning & Support Manager, your responsibilities will include the daily operational running of two libraries (Therapeutic Community and Main Prison) based on site, ensuring that all stock is accounted for, reflecting the current population using these facilities. You will work closely with the small library team supporting all prisoners who use the facilities each day, including reviewing daily attendance with Management and remedial action put in place.
Your duties will consist promoting the Library/Learning Resource Centre (LRC) services to prisoners, staff and visitors at HMP Dovegate, as well as providing a service appropriate to the leisure, cultural, pastoral and educational needs of the prison population, ensuring that the service provides equal access to all. As our new Library Supervisor, you will assist with the running of both library sites, whilst line managing two Library Assistants and the prisoner orderlies. Other key duties will include:
- Promoting and encouraging reading: supporting individuals in making reading choices and seek to motivate and provide solutions to non-attendance to all services.
- Offering LRC induction sessions to new users and keeping up to date with new and topical publications in order to reflect the ethos of the Dovegate LRC.
- Participating in additional recreational and educational activities: e.g. book clubs, reading clubs, Shannon Trust Reading Scheme, delivery of appropriate learning / activity sessions in LRC.
Due to the nature of the role, it is important that you are able to plan and organise your workload proactively in a busy environment and demonstrate a flexible approach to your workload. You will be required to commit to an annual Personal Development Plan (PDR). This will incorporate an interim examine and analyse your personal development pathway, ensuring that all organisational and personal objectives are on target.
What you will need to do the role:
It is vital that you have excellent IT, written & oral communication skills, with the ability to form good working relationships at all levels, as you will be supporting the wider Learning and Skills department. Experience of working in a custodial and/or library environment would be advantageous however, you must have a CILIP Membership or be working towards it as well as a Level 2 in Maths & English.
