Salary: £18,976 plus benefits

Permanent, Full-time, 40 Hrs


Here at Serco, we are looking for an experienced Support Officer to join the Residential Unit at HMP & YOI Doncaster. Reporting into the Custodial Operations Manager, your duties will involve supporting Prison Officers or the operational line dealing with members of the public, visitors to the establishment and prisoners through a variety of tasks.


HMP Doncaster works to ensure that those committed to serve prison sentences by the Courts are held securely and safely and are encouraged to address their offending behaviour in preparation for release into the community. You will be required to work in several areas within the establishment which will require you to work within a team and at times on your own. You will be required to escort contractors, visitors and vehicles and carry out general clerical duties. Other key activities will include:


  • Supervising prisoner work parties, searching prisoner's property, escorting prisoners, and visitors.

  • Routine administrative work, driving prison vehicles, C & R Personal Safety, self-harm prevention.

  • Inputting data and information on to the CMS/ NOMIS System, Security

  • Carrying out Nights Duties in line with the LSS / NSF - if working night duties:

  • Ensure ACCT procedures are followed, conduct roll counts as per LSS.

  • Ensure the supervision of E list / Pot Cat A prisoners is in line with LSS.

  • Routine patrols of wings during night state.

  • If carrying out correspondence duties:

  • Searching prisoner mail in / out, Recording of cash / PO's.

  • Ensure all processes are followed with regards to mail monitoring.

  • Staff searching, visitor searching, roll collator admin.

  • CCTV monitoring, switchboard duties, X-ray duties


What you will need to do the role:


First and foremost, you will have experience of working in a similar environment and a basic understanding of security. You must have a good standard of education and it is desirable for you to have 5 GCSEs Grades C and above or an acceptable equivalent in English and Maths. This role will also involve administrative tasks as part of your day to day duties; therefore, you will need to be computer literate with the ability to maintain systems relevant to the area you will operate in.


Due to the nature of the role, it is important to display a common-sense approach to your workload, with the capacity to make reasonable decisions and lead by example. This is a great role for someone who is confident in their ability to work alone using their own initiative, as well as maintaining good working relationships with colleagues within their team.
