About the role
Here at Babcock (Devonport Royal Dockyard), we are proud to be the UK's leading submarine support provider. We are entrusted with the upkeep and deep maintenance of our Nation's submarines, which have been compared to the space shuttle in terms of complexity and are one of the most challenging engineering projects undertaken in the UK.
Whilst we continue to provide the Royal Navy with safe, highly capable Vanguard and Trafalgar classes of submarine, we are also preparing for the future. The Astute class represents the largest, most advanced and most powerful attack submarines ever operated by the Royal Navy. As a Functional Estimator you will be part of the Business Support team that is integral to the success of the submarines business. You will gain exposure to many different areas of the business, each with its own challenges, all requiring unique and diverse skills ranging from engineering to accounting. Engaging with stakeholders, internal and external, ensuring that estimates meet the project need. Supporting the project manager throughout the project lifecycle by providing timely data analysis.
You will provide high quality Cost Estimates, Cost and Data Analysis and Cost Assurance through the whole project life cycle in support of the Submarine Business Unit to enable sound decision making, planning and financial management.
You will be part of a Business Support team that is integral to the success of the submarine business, by being responsible for the production of multi-disciplined Labour estimates from Work Specification, Drawings and Site visits, for Submarine Bids and for Extra, Additional and Emergent work during the Project Execution Phase.
What do I need to do the role?
* Previous experience of Cost Estimating, Cost and Data Analysis and Cost Assurance, an advantage but not essential.
* Candidate must display an analytical approach to problem-solving.
* Good Knowledge of Excel Spreadsheets.
* Must be able to formulate costs and relate these to actual events across trades.
* An ability to interpret written engineering specifications and technical drawings would be preferred but not essential.
* A sound understanding of the project environment would be an advantage.
* Due to the diverse nature of the role and our desire to build a composite team with varying skill sets a wide range of qualifications will be considered including:
o ONC in an engineering discipline
o APM PMQ or equivalent
o Economic, Mathematical or Business related higher award (equivalent to or higher than ONC)

The successful candidate will hold, or be eligible to acquire, Security Clearance at the appropriate level for this post.
