About the Department

SSEN owns two Distribution Network Operators (DNO): Southern Electric Power Distribution and Scottish Hydro Electric Power Distribution. SSEN is actively progressing the transition for each DNO to perform the role of Distribution System Operator (DSO). In the move to low carbon technology and maximum choice and flexibility for system users and customers, the success of this transition is critical to the future of the business.

Within DSO, we have several different departments which include System and Network Planning, Pricing and Forecasting, Operational Technology and our Control Rooms (North & South).

What is the Role?

The Real Time Systems (RTS) Manager will act as the System Owner for our Distribution Management System (GE PowerOn) and other key operational systems, ensuring reliability, resilience and security. You'll manage risks as required under the Network and Information Systems Directive and prepare asset management plans, project roadmaps and ensure appropriate levels of governance and support for this critical national infrastructure.

You'll maintain the cyber security of the operational technology systems operated by SSEN, ensuring the security applications that have been installed to monitor and manage IT security on the data networks are themselves monitored and managed in an appropriate manner.

Providing day to day management for the pool of highly skilled project managers, technical authorities and design authorities, you'll also chair the RTS Programme Management Board, leading the governance of projects being managed within the team. The successful candidate will provide training, support and development for RTS Technical Engineers, control room staff and others within Operational Technology.

Additionally, you'll have a key role in business continuity plans and will work with others in the Operational Technology team, as a part of any incident response.

What do I need?

The ideal candidate will have a degree level qualification in an Engineering, Computing or Science based subject or the equivalent experience in a similar role. Chartered Engineer would be preferable. You'll have experience in the design, configuration, installation and commissioning of Operational Applications such as DMS, Data Historians, general SCADA, Telemetry and communications systems.

With a good understanding of the operational requirements of SSE businesses, you'll be familiar with the Business Separation, Regulatory and OFGEM customer drivers. You'll bring a working knowledge of various Operating Systems (Windows Desktop, Windows Server, Linux) and Database Applications (Oracle, SQL). A strong understanding of customer management techniques, cyber-security requirements and data networking technology would be beneficial. As a leader, coach and mentor, you'll be a proficient communicator who is organised and adaptable to change.
