As an RF Engineer, you’ll work with international allies, developing technologies and principles to keep naval platforms operating in hostile and sometimes contested environments. You’ll be advising colleagues in the military and defence procurement about maritime radar countermeasure issues.

You’ll need to be able to develop and build positive relationships with industry and international partners and work collaboratively when approaching research to optimise our innovation. You’ll also provide technical leadership to a diverse project team, recognising and utilising their specialist skills in modelling and simulation, trials delivery, threat knowledge and more.

As a leader within this field, you’ll have previous experience in supporting research activities and the delivery and management of engineering projects in RF, radar or radar countermeasures. You’ll be able to plan effectively, and importantly, communicate sophisticated ideas to colleagues and partners across the organisation.

Job description

In this role you will be:

Working within a team of ~14 and reporting to a Team Leader.

The team typically sits within a group of ~50-90 scientists and engineers. Teams work across multiple projects and as scientists and engineers, you will typically play a leading role on 1-2 work packages that sits within projects, led by a Project Technical Authority.
• Support the Project Technical Authority in delivering against research and procurement plans
• Support international research collaboration
• Provide technical briefings on progress in key research areas back to senior technical staff and occasionally key customers and partners;
• Provide technical review and assurance of work done by others within the project;
• Support Project Managers in identifying resource requirements for effective technical delivery of project plans and work with Team Leaders to assign tasks to technical staff

Technical Skills and qualifications:
Qualifications

Essential
BSc/BEng level qualifications in a STEM-based degree
o Understanding of physics concepts including electromagnetism
o Understanding of RF theory
o Ability to apply a broad variety of analytical techniques to solve problems
o Good interpersonal (verbal, presentational and written) communications skills

Desirable
Masters or PhD level qualifications in a physics based degree
Expertise in one or more of the following:
o Applied EM theory
o Simulation tools and methods
o Model based design
o Software Engineering and Architectures
o Engineering management
o Digital signal processing
o Digital electronics
o Experience of working with Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs)
o Practical experience of RF systems including sensing and countermeasures
o Awareness of the air domain
o Proficiency in software e.g. Matlab, C, CST Studio Suite
o Experience of interfacing with laboratory hardware via e.g. LabVIEW, Veristand
o Radio Frequency systems expertise (radar, signal processing etc)
o Experience of working with RF seeker or related technology
o An understanding of Electronic Warfare principles
o Design, simulation and testing at microwave frequencies of:
o High-power microwave RF circuitry (transmitters and receiver system and components).
o Antenna & feed design, including phased arrays.
o Comfortable using standard test equipment such as VNA's, Oscilloscopes and spectrum analysers in anechoic chambers and laboratories.
o Real-time computer control (using tools such as Labview as well as some software skills)
o Familiarity with aircraft avionics (analogue electronics/Microprocessors / digital signal processors / field programmable gate arrays).
