About the role

We are looking for someone to join our team based at Boscombe Down as an RF Test Technician. The role will be part of the Electromagnetic Environmental Effects (E3) Team within the RF Design, Test and Evaluation (RF DT&E) Group; this position and the associated test facilities you will be supporting form part of the wider Engineering and Operations (E&O) Group.

As an RF Test Technician you will assist the Facility Manager, as part of a wider team to ensure that their facilities are maintained such that they remain safe, operational and available, supporting the delivery of a Specialist Technical capability that meets the requirements of the business and our customers.

The RF DT&E team conducts testing activities as part of trials teams which encompasses electromagnetic test disciplines including Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC), the impact of High Intensity Radiated Fields (HIRF), the Hazards of Electromagnetic Radiation to Personnel, Ordnance and Fuel, and Electromagnetic Interference, as well as ground and airborne performance testing of aircraft communication, radio navigation, radar, electronic warfare and other Radio Frequency (RF) based systems.

The role of RF Test Technician within that trials team will include participating in the safe and effective conduct of specific testing tasks relating to civil and military platforms, systems, sub systems and equipment; working closely with members of project teams and customers. Depending on experience the role will also involve managing/ensuring safe and effective delivery of the test capability during a trials campaign, holding briefings to the wider test team, detailing the overall hazards associated with the both facility and trials delivery.

The role will require development of job specific competencies, supported by training, to allow cross-skilling across all parts of the RF Design, Test and Evaluation Group based at Boscombe Down including the RF Environment Generator (REG), Radio Trials Centre (RADEX) and the Anechoic Test Facility (ATF), and potentially the EMC test capability at QinetiQ Farnborough.

What do I need?

  • You must have experience with the use of lab test equipment.
  • The RF Test Technician should have knowledge of radio frequency.
  • You should have EMC Knowledge / test house knowledge.

Please note that all applicants must be eligible for SC clearance as a minimum.

What will I be doing?

  • The RF Test Technician will be performing planned maintenance as well as reactive fault-finding and repair activities to ensure that the facility remains safe, operational and available;
  • You will be responsible for the safe operation and delivery of test capabilities;
  • The RF Test Technician will be conducting pre-trial checks and calibrations as directed by the lead Trials Engineer together with appropriate verification and validation of data after calibration, maintenance and customer trials;
  • You will ensure test equipment is calibrated and ready to conduct trials and to report on and act upon any related failures;
