About the Department
SSE Enterprise Utilities is the Distributed Energy (DE) and Private Networks business of SSE plc. We finance, own, operate and maintain energy infrastructure for commercial, industrial and residential customers - providing them with a market leading project development service and certainty of operational performance and asset management.
What is the Role?
The Senior Commercial Manager Proposals will play a pivotal role in Distributed Energy (DE) by driving our ambition to become a market leading DE business. You will do so by helping us define the business sector propositions and providing commercial leadership and governance on multi-million-pound opportunities for District Heating, Cooling and Electricity Networks; Distributed Generation and Energy Storage; EV Infrastructure; and integration of these services as part of the DE business Smart City, Digital Services and Energy-as-a-Service offering.
You will have an entrepreneurial and inquisitive nature and be capable of leading the proposition development process from end to end with an initial focus on the Irish market.
This will include an ability to collaborate with your business development colleagues to deliver strong customer insights, determining priority segments, understanding the needs of sales, leading the innovation process, driving "go-to market" delivery, and optimising commercial and in-market performance. All of this across multiple sectors and to the high standards expected from a leading brand.
This role will be at the heart of the pre-contract process where you can demonstrate your own skills by injecting leadership, energy, pace, rigour, commerciality and an obsession with delighting customers in everything we do.
This role will be expected to deputise for the Head of Commercial Proposals if required.
What do I need?
An all-round self-starter but having equal ability to work as part of a multi-skilled team of sales, commercial, corporate finance and engineering professionals; you will work at fast pace, to tight deadlines, co-ordinating multiple projects and demonstrate high levels of accuracy and attention to detail in deriving high value propositions to meet Client needs, whilst giving our business a sustainable advantage against our competitors.
You are likely to have had several years commercial or technical experience in the distributed energy marketplace and have an all-round general knowledge of those technical, commercial and regulatory factors that make projects feasible and capable of delivering a commercial return on any SSE investment. You will be expected to have excellent knowledge and experience of different commercial and contractual structures necessary to deliver these returns.
A numerical problem-solver with experience in the use of financial models. You will be comfortable in using your excellent analytical skills to influence at a senior level, both internally and externally to support our business growth strategy and help us reach a £500m revenue target in line with the 5-year business plan.
You will work with internal and external Legal to ensure that all propositions align with the contractual requirements and expectations of the DE business.
As a senior Manager, lead safety, Great Place to Work, objective setting and people development across Customer Propositions
This role would suit an individual capable of working across diverse internal and external stakeholders
Degree educated with a solid track record of working in the Energy, DE or wider Utility sector, ideally with several years involvement at a senior level in pre-contract project development activities.
You may also have alternate experience with project funding or investment companies dealing with energy assets and you come with a high degree of commercial acumen relating to DE transactions involving high value investment delivered through Joint Venture or Special Purpose Delivery vehicles.
Other relevant experience would include grid infrastructure, solar, electric vehicles, heat or batteries along with a track record of driving alignment and pace of progress, whilst working across a combination of legacy and new systems
Ideally, you will have some knowledge of the DE market in Ireland but this is not essential if you can demonstrate transferable skills and knowledge from the UK or other relevant international markets.
