Are you looking for an opportunity to make a difference? Here at WSCC we have a new opportunity in our Legal Services Unit for a Senior Solicitor.

You will be the senior legal advisor within our Commercial Legal Team where you'll provide professional leadership on major Council procurement projects. In addition, you will provide county wide support and advice on procurement and commercial work to client services across the Council. You will lead, guide and support a small team of junior procurement, commercial contracts and construction solicitors, as they develop in their careers.

Reporting to the Principal Solicitor you will provide a quality legal service to client groups across the Council, with an exciting opportunity to shape the design of procurement processes. You will help ensure effective decision-making using risk analysis and cost benefit analysis. In addition you will complete scoping of complex commercial options for high value and high complex Council sourcing and partnership arrangements. You will be accountable for delivering structures to enable sound commercial and operational outcomes across the Council, for example, outsourcing or joint ventures. As well as accountable for the direction and delivery of projects, including analysing, addressing and creating solutions for client service delivery including finance, premises, assets and staffing and pensions.

This role provides challenging and varied work within a public sector environment, and the opportunity to do work you wouldn't get to be involved in within the private sector. This role also gives you the opportunity to feel you make a real difference to the residents of West Sussex.

You will be a qualified solicitor ideally with both public and private sector experience in procurement, commercial contracts and construction law. You will be able to make effective decisions, scope complex commercial high value sourcing and partnership arrangements, deliver outsourcing or joint ventures and provide efficient customer focused services, including service improvements now and in the future through creative problem solving and managing projects and strategies.

You will also have the ability to make sound pragmatic problem solving decisions, which will have a wider service impact and which could be business critical, including the ability to tackle difficult problems of a technical, professional, or resource related nature using existing policies, procedures and knowledge to devise approaches.

Highly developed communication skills in order to persuade, negotiate or influence within or outside the organisation to achieve challenging/sensitive objectives and ensure implementation of solutions. Sound partnership working skills with the ability to develop and manage effective links and relationships across and outside of the organisation and co-ordinate a range of external partners to successfully deliver objectives.

In addition to working within a great team, undertaking complex and rewarding work, and a competitive salary you will have access to:

  • 29 days annual leave + bank holidays with the ability to buy additional leave annually
  • A very generous pension scheme
  • Varied flexible working options including home working
  • Training and development opportunities
  • A range of discounts giving our staff access to hundreds of offers with the opportunity to save over £1,000 a year through our West Sussex Choices benefits platform
