Principal Engineer -Software Engineering (Assurance)

The Royal Navy submarine combat system comprises of several highly complex state-of-the-art assured software subsystems to enable the crew to deliver the submarine combat effect.

The Integrated Combat Systems design assurance team has identified a fantastic opportunity for an individual to provide independent software assurance assessments of the combat systems software.

The software engineering assurance role will require the individual to perform independent through life software assessments across a variety of combat systems software projects, products and processes. The assessment findings are reported to the combat systems project and technical authorities to ensure BAE Systems can continue to deliver a world class combat system to the Royal Navy's flotilla of submarine.

Your main responsibilities as a Principal Engineer - Software will involve:

Perform an independent software maturity assessment of software projects, products and processes to identify and report risk, opportunities, dependencies and issues to technical authorities and project teams, thus providing confidence to the senior management team of product and project delivery.

Support project and engineering teams by providing coaching, guidance and advice on software engineering.

At the relevant point of the engineering lifecycle assure the software systems are designed, built, integrated and accepted into service, with the correct level of maturity and authority. This will also include working with suppliers and the military users of our equipment.

Understand software innovations and new technologies that will help ISC continually improve the performance of the combat system.

Delivering your outputs to agreed time, cost and quality, in order to support project and business milestones, and ensuring that your work meets its contractual, safety and environmental obligations.

Your skills and qualifications:


Thorough knowledge and experience of the end to end software development and acquisition lifecycle.

The ability to apply good software management practices to yours and others work

Experience of being responsible for the management, delivery and sign off of software products and systems

Experience of working to relevant engineering standards (eg ISO-12207), including product safety, product security and environmental regulations

Work independently with internal teams, suppliers and the customer, and provide software guidance and advice.

Qualification in computer science\software, systems, electronic engineering\Information Technology.


Diploma\Degree level qualification (or equivalent experience) in relevant STEM subject (Engineering/ Physics/ Maths/ Science).

Member of appropriate professional institution; Chartered Engineer or working towards Chartership.

Specialist knowledge of Safety or Security in relation to software intensive systems

Integrated Combat Systems:

Integrated Combat Systems is part of BAE Systems Submarines. We predominantly supply to the UK MoD but with smaller derivative work done in support of international Customers. Our team is responsible for system design, build and/or procurement of the major electronic and mechanical systems on a submarine, as well as provision of test, integration and support services.

Innovation is central to our DNA and has produced the Common Combat System (CCS) to address the customer's affordability, technology and capability challenges. It is based on commercial off-the-shelf technology (COTS) coupled with bespoke military hardware and software and is being progressively rolled-out into the UK's Submarine flotilla.
