The role
As a Welding Technician, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. You will be responsible for the development of new processes for the maintenance of submarines.

Day-to-day, you'll carry out the development and welding of Welding Procedure Qualification Records (WPQR). This involves working closely with a Welding Engineer and the setting up and operating of welding equipment.

  • Assisting Welding Engineers in the research and develop of new welding processes and technologies.
  • Assisting Welding Engineers in the development and review of preliminary welding procedure specifications (pWPS).
  • Assisting and supporting Welding Engineers review and update current welding procedure specifications (WPS).
  • Working in conjunction with Babcock's Weld Quality Management System (ISO3834-2) to ensure quality practises are abided by.

This role is full time, 35 hours per week and is based on site at Devonport Royal Dockyard.

Essential experience of the Welding Technician

  • Engineering background through either an apprentice training scheme, or college training.
  • Computer literacy; experience in using engineering software would be an advantage.
  • Able to demonstrate a working knowledge of submarines / surface ships in both structural applications and pipe systems.
  • Have an understanding of welding processes and techniques with significant experience of manual and orbital TIG pipe welding in situ.
  • They should be driven to solve complex problems as a team and engage with stakeholders to find a solution.

Qualifications for the Welding Technician

  • Qualification in welding processes, minimum requirement NVQ level 3 or equivalent in MMA, FCAW, MIG/MAG or TIG.

Security Clearance
The successful candidate must be a sole UK national who is able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) / Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information (NNPPI) security clearance for this role.
