Description

Our commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant

Gentoo signed a Corporate Covenant in 2015 and were awarded ERS Silver Award in the same year, then Gold in 2020. Also in 2015 we created the Armed Forces Housing Pledge launched at the Chartered Institute of Housing Conference. This pledge recognises that allocations policies should give priority to returning service personnel and within days of its launch 48 housing organisations had signed up. We have a dedicated Armed Forces Allocations Champion and a Veterans group. We are an active member of Sunderland Armed Forces Partnership, developing links between partners across the City and the Armed Forces and take part and financially support our Armed Forces Day. A local service charity, Veterans in Crisis Sunderland, awarded Gentoo Platinum Partner status in November 2019 for our support in getting homeless veterans off the streets, we are now their housing provider of choice. Many of our staff take part and support Cuthy’s annual bike ride, a local forces charity which has raised money for Brothers in Arms and the Parachute Regiment Association.

About us

Gentoo is a housing association that provides more than 60,000 people in Sunderland with a place they can call home.

We believe everyone has the right to live in a good quality home they can afford.

We invest millions of pounds every year in keeping our properties safe, secure, and compliant; and our communities strong and resilient.

We play our part locally in addressing the UK housing crisis, by building hundreds of new, modern and contemporary homes for rent in Sunderland – homes that meet the needs of local people. We also build new homes for sale through Gentoo Homes, our commercial house building arm, which generates a surplus that is reinvested into Gentoo Group to support us building homes for rent.

We also support our tenants, residents and communities by investing in services that help people to live their best possible life. This includes helping people into work, supporting victims of domestic abuse and anti-social behaviour, enabling young people to live independently and providing well-being support to elderly tenants and residents.
