Our commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant

  • We have signed the Covenant and are recognised as an employer at Gold level.
  • We actively promote employment at the university and as educators promote personal advancement through education in order to maximise potential.  Generous additional leave entitlements are provided for those still serving.
  • We employ people from the Defence community and as educators we have more than a 100 students from the defence community.
  • For those still serving, the periodic mobilisation requirement is recognised.
  • GCU is recognised throughout Scotland and beyond.  Its Veterans Champion Jim Castle, chairs the sector organisation responsible for all universities and FE colleges in Scotland, who operate in the Defence community space.
  • We are proud to have spread the word across the whole of Scotland.
  • Jim also sits on; the Scottish Parliamentary Cross Party Group for Veterans and Families; the Scottish Funding Council Armed Forces and Veterans Community Group; and the SCQF Veterans Steering group (working on recognition of military qualifications).

About us

  • GCU’s business is Higher Education
  • We have more than 20,000 students and 1,600 staff
  • We have campuses in Glasgow, London and New York
  • We have articulation agreements with the major colleges so that it does not matter about prior academic achievement, we can provide a pathway to university and future success, whatever your background
  • We are the University “for the Common Good”.  We work hard to advance the opportunities for groups not always associated with Universities.
  • We have Common Good Core Values; Integrity; Responsibility; Confidence; and Creativity.  We actively promote responsible leadership.  No doubt as members of the defence community, you will recognise that you have these skills already.
  • We have been involved in providing education to the community for many years and have been active in promoting the opportunities since 2013
  • In 2019, we developed the first University Defence Community, known as VAFFF (Veterans and Armed Forces Family and Friends).  This is open to staff and students.
