Oxfordshire County Council

Description

Our commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant

We were the first Local Authority to sign the Armed Forces Covenant in 2011 and have a long history of support for the service community. We:

  • offer support for reservist deployments, guaranteed interviews for leavers and veterans (that meet essential criteria) and work experience for service leavers
  • offer paid leave for CFAVs and flexible working for military spouses
  • make exceptions for service spouses to repay Discretionary Maternity Pay when a return to work is prevented by a service posting
  • partnered with Headteachers to hold a Service Children’s Conference in September 2019, where students, Heads and Governors focused on how to improve support for service children
  • introduced the automatic prioritisation of service children for schools admissions and produced a guide for service families to navigate the process
  • signpost to 70 Oxfordshire based services supporting the armed forces community through the free app ‘Forces Connect’
  • have a network of 14 staff that are armed forces ‘buddies’ supporting and advising veterans, service leavers, spouses and/or the children of service personnel to assist with integration into the civilian workforce.
