Our commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant
SHAID (Single Homeless Action Initiative in Durham) pledge that we acknowledge and understand that those who serve or who have served in the armed forces, and their families, should be treated with dignity, fairness and respect in the communities, economy and society they serve with their lives.
About us
SHAID / St Peters Court have supported homeless veterans since opening the project on 1st April 2011, we have received over 2835 referrals and supported 2005 veterans to access permanent accommodation. The main purpose of the organisation projects is to identify each individual support needs and signpost them to the appropriate agencies, e.g. Combat Stress, VWALS, and MIND and the Drug & Alcohol services, Finchale College, New College Durham, Welfare rights and CAB.
Since the project opened the following companies have offered training opportunities and employment, to over 1205 ex-service personnel from St Peters Court: Gentoo, Durham County Council, Nissan, Go Northeast, Durham University, St Margaret’s Care, Durham, Newcastle, Gateshead Councils and other local companies.
The organisation supports males or females while they adapt to changes from armed forces life to civilian life. St Peters Court is the only supported accommodation that allows family and friends to stay over which is an excellent way for families and estranged fathers to build up their relationships with their children.
All service personnel will receive support gaining independent living skills to enable them to move into their own accommodation with additional support if required. The organisation regular liaises with a number of Armed Forces agencies such as Spaces at Catterick Garrison, The Royal British Legion, SSAFA in Durham, Scottish Veterans, Veterans UK.
Shaid continue to support veterans with disabilities and has ensured all staff members attended the disability discrimination act 2010 course.
