Description

Our commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant

The University recognises the vital role that the armed forces play and the valuable contribution that reservists and veterans make to the national interest. Reservists, veterans and their families bring a variety of transferable skills and qualities to the University such as leadership, team working, communication and organisational ability, developed during military careers and supporting those in the armed forces. We offer an extensive Professional Development Programme to all our staff which focuses on training and development to benefit their current and future employment.

We strive to support the values of the Armed Forces Covenant in many ways including:

- Support membership of the reserve forces by supporting its employees.
- Support employees who are compulsorily mobilised for service in the armed forces.
- Agree, wherever possible, to be flexible in granting time off to enable employees to undertake reserve service training.
- Support reservists taking time off for training with two weeks' paid leave (where there are several reservists in one department/team, departmental priorities will be considered alongside requests to take time off for training). Leave requests in excess of these days may be granted, subject to the line manager's approval, to be taken from the employee's annual leave entitlement or as unpaid leave.
- Ensure that staff who are absent from work due to mobilisation and/or at training events will not be treated adversely.
