Description

Our Commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant

Bury Council is proud to be a signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant and to have received Gold level accreditation of the MoD’s Defence Employer Recognition Scheme. We represent a town with a strong military history, being the regimental home of the Lancashire Fusiliers, and are totally committed to supporting our Armed Forces community. Full details can be found on our website, but this includes:

  • Providing targeted support to veterans through employment and skills programmes
  • Offering free leisure passes to all armed forces personnel, veterans and reservists
  • Working with GP practices to help them be recognised as Veteran Friendly
  • Developing a formal Health Needs Assessment for the veteran community
  • Recognising armed forces personnel in our hosing and homelessness activity
  • Supporting community events, particularly celebrating Remembrance, Gallipoli and Armed Forces Day
  • Including military veterans as an additional protected characteristic in our Inclusion Strategy and equality impact assessment process
  • Further enhancing our own supported employment opportunities and internal employment policies.

About us

Bury Council provides a diverse range of services to the six townships of Bury, Prestwich, Radcliffe, Ramsbottom, Whitefield and Tottington, in the northern part of Greater Manchester. With our partners, we are striving to achieve our vision for Bury 2030 as being a place which is as achieving faster economic growth then the national average, with lower than national average levels of deprivation.

Bury is the ultimate mix of town and countryside, and is a great place to live, work, study and visit. It benefits from an attractive environment with good quality housing, excellent retail facilities and superb transport links to Manchester and beyond. Bury has been named the 17th best place for families to live in England and Wales, and the happiest part of Greater Manchester (ONS). Furthermore, Trinity Mirror Group named it the third ‘trendiest’ place to live in Greater Manchester!
