BFBS Academy (SMS Spouses)

Free & Online

Social Media Spouses is a training programme offered by the BFBS Academy. It's the UK’s first free online social media training programme for the spouses and partners of full-time HM Forces personnel. The course is funded by the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust and people can apply at sms.ssvc.com. Social Media Spouses addresses a real need amongst military spouses and partners to obtain the skills required to find flexible and interesting work that fits around military and family life. As well as being the first dedicated course to offer detailed training on how to use social media to grow a business, or find a career in social media.

Our commitment to the Armed Forces community

BFBS recognises the value serving personnel, reservists, veterans and military families bring to our business. We will seek to uphold the principles of the AFC by:

  1. supporting and enhancing the morale, welfare and sense of community, interests and effectiveness of the Armed Forces community by providing entertainment, comms, information, online communities, training and other related activities;
  2. promoting and supporting the Armed Forces and the work they undertake to the general public via our TV, radio, and digital channels;
  3. supporting the up-skilling and employment of veterans, service leavers and families of those currently serving by offering training programmes, which launched in 2017 with the Forces Media Academy.
  4. striving to support the employment of Service spouses and their partners across our bases in the UK and overseas;
  5. endeavouring to offer a degree of flexibility in granting leave for Service spouses and partners before, during and after a partner's deployment;
  6. seeking to support our employees who choose to be members of the Reserve forces, including by accommodating their training and deployment where possible;
  7. offering support to our local cadet units, either in our local community or in local schools, where possible;
  8. aiming to actively participate in Armed Forces Day by promoting and championing the work of the Armed Forces;
  9. raising money for a number of Forces charities through the 'Big Salute'.

Military Coworking Network

The Military Coworking Network (MCN) is a community of military spouses working together to create a network of coworking office spaces on military bases. These coworking hubs are supported by an online community for spouses everywhere to share advice, information, inspiration, and create a network of contacts. Having a dedicated space where spouses can go to work and study together not only reduces social isolation; their off and online communities offer help and support to enable you to maintain flexible jobs which work around your military lifestyle.

The coworking hubs are fully equipped office spaces on bases throughout the UK and Europe. They provide the facilities that you would expect in any office (a quiet workspace that isn’t the kitchen table, fast wifi, printing & good coffee!) but more importantly they can give you access to local professional networking opportunities for your career or business, information about employers in the local area, higher education opportunities and the chance to meet new people and make friends. Social isolation can have a huge impact on mental wellbeing, and the hubs are more than just a space to work from; they offer a professional support network of like-minded people; a supportive and encouraging environment in which to work, develop employability skills, and tap into the expertise of others around them.

The hubs are run by a team of volunteers on a not-for-profit basis, with annual fees kept low at just £20, in order to cover any running costs.
