Adviser, Previously Looked After Children and Kinship

We have an exciting opportunity to join the Virtual School for Children in Care, Previously in Care and Children with a Social Worker.

In this role, you will be under the direction of the Adviser who leads the work for previously in care children and on the extension of the Virtual School Head role to children with a social worker as we continue to develop our offer of support and our response to the inclusion of children in kinship care from September 2024.

You will be working strategically to support children who are within kinship care. This includes children aged from 0 up to 18 in all education settings. You will also be working to extend our existing offer of support to all children with Special Guardianship Orders (including those not previously in care) to access information and advice.

You will work within a team to plan, promote, deliver, and evaluate a range of resources and training to support trauma informed and attachment aware practice within our Norfolk schools and settings.

You may be required to deliver training either virtually or face to face to delegates within schools or our partners within Children’s services. You will work to establish key partnerships with wider agencies who may be involved in supporting these children and their families to raise awareness of the Virtual School’s offer and effectively signpost to other services within Norfolk. You will also respond to requests from schools and other professionals for advice and guidance about supporting children’s engagement in education and evidence-based interventions that can level up children’s outcomes.

You will be part of the team within the Virtual School with responsibility for children previously in care, children with a social worker and kinship. You also contribute to the delivery of the tiered offer of support to settings, families and professionals supporting pupils who are within the previously in care cohort.

You will be required to be up to date on the guidance ‘Promoting the education of children with a social worker’ (June 2021) ‘Championing Kinship Care: The National Kinship Care Strategy’ (December 2023) and statutory guidance linked to this cohort, as well as the existing statutory guidance for ‘Promoting the education of looked-after children and previously looked-after children’ (February 2018).

If you are passionate about improving outcomes for children and young people in kinship care and those previously in care, working to reduce the significant barriers to education that they may face, we would like to hear from you.

Please contact the Adviser for Previously in Care and Children with a Social Worker, Harriet Tunnicliff harriet.tunnicliff@norfolk.gov.uk if you would like an informal discussion about this role.
