Job Description

Are you looking for a role where you can reduce the carbon footprint in the construction of schemes? Do you want a job where you can leverage your expertise in defining a novel role, then this may be the perfect fit for you.

Our Asset team, part of the newly established Delivery Directorate, is seeking a Decarbonisation Manager. In this pivotal role, you will drive the development of robust decarbonisation plans for our new transport assets and explore innovative carbon footprint strategies that align with our organisational and national targets.

Collaborating closely with project teams, TFWM Operations, and contractors, you will be instrumental in driving ambitious initiatives including Dudley Interchange and Sprint Phase 2. Your responsibilities will include gathering data on construction materials to assess their carbon footprint and providing guidance on utilising low-carbon materials and methodologies, ensuring a carbon reduction strategy is embedded into the delivery of major construction contracts.

This is a crucial role for the organisation as you will ensure that Transport for West Midlands’ (TfWM) £2.2Bn capital programme aligns with the region’s Climate Action Plan and Local Transport Plan. Monitoring our assets and guaranteeing that they are resilient and can function in various climates is critical due to climate adaptation and our promise to make the West Midlands greener and better connected.

This presents a unique opportunity for an individual deeply committed to advancing eco-friendly public transport and elevating the prominence of decarbonisation initiatives. We are seeking a seasoned decarbonisation expert who thrives on collaborative working, possesses self-motivation, and radiates positivity.

What you will be doing

  • Inform, develop, and promote evidence based technical policy in relation to carbon reduction and sustainability.
  • Provide expert advice to shape and inform Carbon Management Plans associated with the delivery of major transport infrastructure.
  • Responsible for early supply chain engagement to input into tendering exercises.
  • Responsible for the development of monitoring and auditing strategies to manage, monitor and inspect construction practices.
  • Maintain collaborative relationships and tactical governance across TfWM, key stakeholders, contractors, and the wider supply chain.
  • Constructively challenge and review project development and programmes
  • Prepare reports for senior management, elected members, WMCA committees, programme boards and Local Cabinet

About you

  • Experience of developing and implementing carbon management projects, preparing successful business cases, managing specific carbon/sustainability programmes and preparing risk assessments in line with agreed targets and plans
  • Knowledge of carbon management and sustainability policy and application, preferably within the transport sector
  • Degree and Post Graduate Degree or equivalent in a related field such as Transportation Planning and Management.

We believe hybrid working is the best way for our organisation to fulfil our commitment to a modern, agile workplace while continuing to provide a great service to our customers. Hybrid working means having flexibility between working in the office and at home on agreed days, where a role allows. This is agreed between an employee and their line manager, considering the business, team, and employee needs.

The location for this role is 16 Summer Lane, with regular site visits required. It is expected that you can split your time between the office and working remotely, with at least 3 days a week spent in the office.
