Electrical Engineering Supervisor 

Technical Services Group (TSG)

Salary: Band 8 £33,945 - £36,647, plus statutory overtime and callout allowance £52,172 - £56,024.

Hours: 47.5 hours per week on average, 07:00 - 17:00 Monday to Friday. Plus, callout one week in four, covering evenings weekends and public holidays.

Rostered rest day one Friday in four.

The service:

The council employ us to facilitate the repair, maintenance, modification, and installation of existing assets and new equipment for Portsmouth International Port , including the Camber Dock area. We also provide electrical & mechanical diagnostic and fitting skills on a range of works including capital projects, planned and preventative maintenance, corrective, minor and major works. 

We operate a callout service, where breakdowns are covered 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

What is the role? 

This is a working Supervisor Role. Responsible for supervising a team of Electrical & Mechanical Fitters and Engineering Technicians. The role will involve:

  • Organising and arranging the daily workload of the group fitters and technicians, ensuring priority maintenance and repairs are carried out promptly and efficiently in accordance with the Ports operational and technical requirements.
  • Supporting the Senior management team in the delivery of the Ports 20-year Master Plan.
  • Managing and operating the Ports Maintenance Management System.
  • Implementing all necessary H&S directives and assisting in H&S audits.
  • Producing risk assessments and method statements as required.
  • Organising and supervising external Port contractors ensuring all Port H&S policies are adhered to.
  • Managing the HR requirements for the TSG team and ensuring staff are adequately trained.
  • Participating in the out-of-hours standby roster.

Responsible to the Maintenance & Facilities Manager (M&FM).

Who is the person?

You need to:

  • Have served a recognised electrical engineering apprenticeship, and ideally also have a BTEC/HNC in Electrical Engineering (or similar/equivalent experience) qualification.
  • Be qualified in BS7671 Requirements for Electrical Installations (18 th Edition). And ideally qualified in Initial and Periodic Electrical Inspection and Testing, BS 2391.
  • Have a general knowledge of electrical and mechanical engineering.
  • Be capable of working from engineering drawings.
  • Have experience of staff management and be able to lead and motivate a team. 
  • Supervise corrective works on non-functioning or damaged equipment as reported through the Maintenance Management System (MMS).   
  • Be qualified in or if not willing to attend courses for confined space, MEWP operation, slinging/ lifting and working at height.
  • Have experience in workshop equipment, periodic inspections, statutory equipment checks and planned maintenance schedules
  • Undertake other repairs and general maintenance on Port assets including operational structures, Mechanical & electrical assets, machinery, Hydraulics, pneumatics, and pumps.
  • Have project management skills. 
  • Be proficient in the use of IT systems and equipment.
  • Be fully conversant with Health & Safety legislation and COSHH assessments in order to perform safely the duties listed above. 
  • Participate in the TSG "On Call" roster team for one week in four and also provide additional cover during periods of sickness absence and other unforeseen absences within the group.
  • Be confident working unsupervised and able to use your own initiative. You'll need to be adaptable and flexible to meet the demands of the service.
  • Required to comply with all PIP and Portsmouth City Council policies and procedures. 
  • Undertake any other tasks that may be reasonably allocated by PIP.

This is a physically demanding role, and you must be able to work at heights and in confined spaces as well as outdoors in all weathers.
