From our Southampton Store Support office (SSO) we equip our stores, our people, and our whole business with everything it takes to help our millions of customers create a home they'll love. Join us as a Marketplace Category Manager and you'll be a big part of this.

The Marketplace Category Manager sits within the B&Q Marketplace function. Launched in March 2022, we've already added over 500,000 products from third party sellers to B&Q's diy.com ecommerce channel and app, nearly tripled the products available, and rocket boosted our sales. For people who love a challenge, this is the place to be. It's a culture where ideas fly, where you'll develop fast, where you'll be encouraged to step out of your lane.

Key responsibilities

As a Marketplace Category Manager for the B&Q Marketplace, you will win market share by strategically managing your categories to deliver growth. Your focus will be on optimizing the marketplace range and the merchant mix to craft compelling offers and ensure optimal availability to meet customer demand. You will architect long-term growth for B&Q and our merchants while also ensuring alignment between your team, your category strategy, and the overall Marketplace strategy. You will capitalize on market trends, fostering healthy competition among merchants to position B&Q as the destination marketplace for home improvement.

Key Accountabilities / Responsibilities:

  • Achieve marketplace category GMV, Take Rate, and Participation targets.
  • Build and execute the long-term category growth strategy for marketplace products.
  • Use data to develop the merchant mix, stock availability, pricing hierarchy, and average item price to meet growth targets.
  • Foster healthy competition for the best offers.
  • Exploit seasonal and promotional opportunities to maximise category performance.
  • Work alongside Marketplace Business Development and Onboarding to ensure you have the right new merchants coming into your category.
  • Lead category-specific projects, including tech deployments, campaign launches and marketing events.
  • Directly manage Key Account Managers (KAMs) and Account Managers (AMs) operating in your categories.
  • Coordinate with other internal teams to ensure adequate support in areas like supply chain, customer service and marketing; ensuring that changes in our business create win-win scenarios for B&Q and our merchants.
  • Ensure merchants in your categories meet and exceeded their quality metrics.

  • In depth knowledge of e-commerce sales drivers.
  • Proven experience in trading and developing category/range performance within the retail sector.
  • Previous experience in a scale up business and/or in the home improvement sector is a plus.
  • Professional experience managing sellers/suppliers in a leadership capacity.
  • Highly data literate and able to apply this in the development of long-term plans, underpinned by astute strategic thinking.
  • Comfortable generating and evaluating forecasts, metrics, and analyses to measure and act on trading performance.
  • Able to lead a high achieving team of 5+ people, motivating and upskilling whilst also allowing space to excel.
  • Confident leveraging marketing and driving traffic via merchandising/content to grow performance.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with clear logical thinking. You like taking charge in ambiguous situations and are creative enough to come up with scalable solutions to day-to-day operational challenges.
