What you'll be doing:

  • Developing mathematical models using Mathworks® MATLAB® and Simulink® to assist in informing the design of submarines
  • Verification and validation of electrical models using mathematical methods and trial data
  • Maintaining models by liaison with industrial partners and internal and external customers, and managing model configuration control
  • Analysing and interpreting model predictions in the context of the inherent modelling assumptions, including representational limitations and data quality considerations
  • Running models to generate outputs in response to design engineers' requests for information
  • Reporting and presenting modelling and analysis outputs to wider audiences, including key external stakeholders
  • Providing mathematical modelling support to other functions within the business, where required
  • Performing analysis of large datasets using MATLAB to feed into engineering output reports and presentations

Your skills and experiences:

Essential

  • Degree or equivalent qualification or experience in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Power
  • Significant experience in mathematical modelling and simulation
  • Technically proficient in the use of MATLAB® and Simulink® and ideally Simscape

Desirable

  • Knowledge of submarine power systems, rotating machines and power converter topologies
  • Appreciation of modern software engineering concepts and methodologies
  • Experience in using Power System Analysis software (IPSA, DIgSILENT etc.)

The Power System Modelling and Analysis team:

As a Principal Engineer -Power System Modelling & Analysis, you will be working within the Electrical Power team, who are responsible for the design and development of the Dreadnought class submarine's power system, as well as specifying and procuring all electrical distribution equipment. More specifically, you will be responsible for development, maintenance and operation of mathematical models relating to the integrated electrical plant and whole power system performance. You will collaborate with other engineers in both the Electrical Power team and across the broader business. The output of your modelling activities will be vital to the design verification and validation process, from undertaking various power system analysis studies, through to analysis of test and trial data to ensure requirements are met at both an equipment and power system level.

The role involves applying contemporary modelling software and methods to a highly complex technical engineering product and offers wide-ranging career progression opportunities.
