  • The design, installation, operation, and funding of district heating system to serve 3500 homes in Clapham as part of a major regeneration project.
  • The design and installation of a heat network in a rural community in Cambridgeshire to replace oil boilers in 300 homes with centralised low carbon heat generation.
  • The design and installation of a ground source heat pump system to provide heating and cooling to a new development of 300 homes a gym and office building in South London.
  • The design, installation, and operation of a new city centre wide low carbon district heating system for the City of Cardiff
  • Developing detailed long-term decarbonisation plans for existing large scale district heating networks to allow them to transition from gas fired CHP led generation to low carbon generation.

The Role

Hemiko are seeking a Project Manager to deliver both major and small District Heating projects across the southern region of the UK.

 

In the project planning / feasibility phase the role will include reviewing site survey data to inform the design team’s work and to assess/reduce the risks encountered during the construction phase with a look to operability and maintainability of the final installation. It will also include collaboration with commercial and pre-construction teams to review budget and programme.

 

During construction, the role will include cost and programme management; resource, specialist subcontractor and supplier allocation and coordination; technical support to ensure correct interfacing of works and that specifications, industry and legislative requirements are met.

 

Post construction, assistance compiling the O&M / H&S files will be required to ensure a smooth handover to O&M teams.

 

The role will suit someone with exceptional skills in communication, problem solving, negotiation, planning, time-management, decision making and problem solving.

 

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate experience delivering projects in the following sectors of, construction, utilities, and infrastructure. You will be working within the UK division of a large European operation which provides high quality services for many sectors and industries whilst supporting the sustainability of real estate with a positive effect for the environment and society and by forging a path to a carbon-neutral future for the company.

 

Candidate

We are looking for someone who is organised, initiative-taking and capable of leading on key multi-discipline work packages. The role will include access to mentors to allow individuals to enhance their core competencies and enable career development. The company is relatively small but with very fast growth. The candidate will be able to work as part of a team and take ownership and fulfil their tasks on time.

The candidate will need to be comfortable communicating with team members, clients, and clients’ engineers and with contractors and specialist suppliers. They will be personable and a good communicator.

Key Responsibilities:

Safety, Health, Environment, Quality (SHEQ)

  • Visible leader in adherence to and improvement of SHEQ policies and procedures
  • Support business improvement by conducting at least one safety Audit per month.
  • Monitor incident and near miss reporting across PM’s sites and encourage safety-first atmosphere.
  • Ensure that all safety event actions are closed out.
  • Ensure project compliance with CDM requirements and CPP.

Project Management

  • Assist PMs to develop and maintain project programmes.
  • Offer mentoring and advice to direct reports on project problems, risks, and opportunities.
  • Monitor and report on programme, commercial and contractual requirements.
  • Oversee resource planning across full project lifecycles.
  • Provide technical guidance to PMs to meet specs, legislation & industry best practice.
  • Oversee resolution of technical issues and outstanding project works.
  • Site visits as required.
  • Recruitment and management of direct reports including objective-setting with a view to career growth, annual appraisals, personal development opportunities identified and actioned.
  • Attend and chair major internal, client & supply chain meetings, ensuring accuracy of minutes.
  • Advise PMs on build-strategy including off-site pre-fabrication, on-site laydown/fabrication, build sequence, testing and commissioning.
  • Assist PMs on submission of statutory applications (e.g., s.50s, etc)
  • Report progress and concerns to the Head of Construction and various stakeholders
  • Ensure Hemiko systems and procedures are communicated to the project teams, are understood, and are used consistently through the projects in line with company best practice.
  • Assist in producing and issuing technical documentation if required.
  • Ensure soft-landing and project handovers are executed and recorded.
  • Seek, engage with, and share knowledge on sustainable and carbon neutral industrial solutions.

Commercial & Contractual

  • Digest contract tender documents to ensure the scope of works and budget is understood, and project knowledge is not lost through project handover stages.
  • Oversee project budgets and ensure accurate cost control & reporting.
  • Assist with procurement of materials and sub-contractor works packages.
  • Assist commercial team to develop and define contracts that support a level of risk acceptable to the business.
  • Ongoing contract management with the support of the commercial team
  • Client and subcontractor point of escalation for all construction-related matters during project build phase.

Customer Service & Communications

  • Review project updates & report upwards to board level
  • Coordinate and consult directly with internal and external stakeholders to develop strong relationships. This includes design & commissioning teams, suppliers, contractors, and clients.
  • Ensure clarity and accuracy of stakeholder communications.
  • Share lessons learnt with the organisation.

 

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

  • Knowledge of industry typical systems, processes & best practices

Experience

  • 5+ years in management roles within the DH, Utilities and/or construction industry
  • Record in delivering large, complex £10m-£50m projects.
  • Tender package preparation, response vetting and pulling together contract packs.
  • JCT / NEC contract management and dispute resolution
  • Project cost control and financial reporting
  • Comfortable seeking appropriate specialist advice and making key project decisions.
  • Vetting and recruiting candidates
  • Managing direct reports
  • Specialist experience in at least one area of district heating networks is beneficial.

 

Required Qualifications/ Training

  • Engineering degree, NVQ L6 in a construction related discipline or equivalent industry experience.
  • CSCS (Gold, Black, or White card)
  • SMSTS
  • JCT Contract Management
  • NEBOSH or IOSH
  • Environmental related such as SEATS.
  • Procore Certifications (Project Manager: Core Tools, Project Management, Preconstruction, Quality & Safety)

  • Remuneration: Base salary £50,000 - £65,000 (depending on experience).
