Job Title: Senior Project Manager

Division: UK Construction / Construction North

Location: Regional office is Birmingham, Project site is Coventry

Reporting to:  Project Director

Construction North is part of the UK Construction business and includes the Midlands, the North and Scotland. Projects on average range between £2 - £50 million predominantly procured through Public Sector Frameworks with some projects in the private sector. Sectors include Leisure, Justice, Defence, Education, Health and Commercial offices.

The opportunity

The role is for a Senior Project Manager to lead a circa £40 mln Commercial office refurb project in Coventry.

Role purpose

  • To be responsible and accountable for providing best practice project management leadership to ensure the safe, successful, cost efficient and timely delivery of projects. Provide effective risk management and problem resolution, whilst leading from the front. Accountability is key to this role.
  • To deliver a quality service and product to our clients in line with the project goals by working collaboratively with the professional team and applying ISG systems, procedures and culture.
  • To ensure adequate resources for the assigned projects, ensuring appropriate levels of skill, focusing heavily on Design Management, Procurement, Installation, Commissioning and Handover. Development of team members skillsets, providing coaching and personal mentoring, whilst facilitating skills transference across the project teams to develop their recruitment, selection and resourcing capability.
  • To provide guidance, risk management and management of client team expectations through early identification of issues through project reporting, project meetings and any means necessary to ensure a transparent and professional delivery.
  • To proactively set health & safety standards and culture for all assigned projects and to take appropriate action where necessary to reduce safety risk.

Key accountabilities

Winning Work:

  • From a project basis and working closely with the Directors, identify and develop long-term relationships to grow the business, profitably.
  • Select, with divisional leadership, appropriate skills to prepare and lead proposals and presentations to win projects
  • Ensure that bid teams are fully briefed and also debriefed, sharing learning and feedback with the team and divisional leadership.

Effective Resourcing:

  • Plan skill requirements for assigned projects, managing and personally working with the project teams to recruit and select quality employees within budget and headcount (permanent and where necessary, agency or freelance), adhering to company recruitment and selection processes and agency preferred suppliers
  • Proactively transfer resourcing skills to project leadership staff
  • Ensure continuity of resourcing for assigned projects 

Project Set-up and Close-Out:

  • Direct timely, quality and cost efficient set up for all assigned projects, ensuring that meeting and reporting documentation and schedules are implemented from the outset and are in accordance with company Best Practice
  • Ensure set-up is linked to close-out in terms of establishing quality processes, problem resolution and snagging with focus on alignment of cost, scope and timescale from project start-up
  • Provide support and direction to ensure timely and efficient close-out
  • Oversee focus on client satisfaction throughout project lifecycle in line with cost, scope and timescales
  • Conduct Customer Experience processes and align team to achieve customer key drivers
  • Timely and robust completion of Framework KPIs to support ISG framework reputation and performance

Best Practice Health & Safety:

  • Proactively monitor project health & safety processes, culture and behaviours, ensuring compliance with the Safety Management System and personally attending any serious incidents. Accountability for the site safety culture.
  • Establish exemplary standards of site set up and appearance to support ISGs image and set the standard for site cleanliness.
  • Promote H&S education to/with trade suppliers, working proactively to identify appropriate H&S initiatives to raise awareness and avoid complacency at all times

Quality Project Reporting:

  • Manage and take an active part in the monthly divisional project reporting process ensuring the line manager has reliable and accurate information on which to base his Board Report.  Through the monthly reporting process and other feedback, identify and address potential problem areas, ensuring that client reporting is accurate and appropriate.
  • Accurate programme reporting and proactive management to ensure timely completion and adherence to Absolute Completion strategy.

Effective Risk Management:

  • Proactively manage and monitor programmes, change process and financial reporting for assigned projects to ensure commercial and relationship risk avoidance and management
  • Establish and maintain regular project team meetings that include risk assessment and management as key agenda items
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with clients and client professional teams for all assigned projects, conducting Fireside chats , as required and personally troubleshooting as necessary
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with owners and directors of supply chain organisations and suppliers of all assigned projects, attending divisional trade contractor meetings and providing support in effective management of supply chain
  • Transfer learning gained from your role on the Quality Audit panel to assigned projects.

People and Relationship Management:

  • Manage project construction teams in line with the values and culture of ISG
  • Provide effective feedback to project teams and individuals
  • Act promptly and positively to address performance or behaviour issues as and when they arise, utilising the support of HR
  • Provide input to individual's PDPs as required.
  • Responsibility for the relationship with the client including addressing issues, meeting deliverables, client reporting and main point of contact. Interface with the Framework as appropriate.

Skills & experience

  • To be able to nurture both existing and new client and consultant relationships
  • To take full ownership of active tender proposals including managing the process
  • Select the team and develop job winning strategies at tender stage
  • To have previously held a Project Manager role for at least 3 years
  • Manage a large team providing direction and guidance for project success
  • Hold close supply chain relationships and leverage them during job delivery
  • Oversee the PDR process of the site team to aid and improve performance of team members

Qualifications

  • Relevant trade / technical / degree qualified
  • MCIOB (preferred)
