About us

Cumbria Constabulary is a high-performing police force which was founded in 1974. The Constabulary’s mission is to deliver an outstanding police service to keep Cumbria safe. Underpinning this work are defined standards and values of public service, integrity, inclusivity and industry.

The Constabulary covers the whole of Cumbria, an area of 2,613 square miles, serving a population of approximately half a million people. Cumbria is predominately a rural county, with millions visiting the area each year.

The force has two basic command units (BCUs) – Cumberland and Westmorland and Furness. The BCUs consist of a variety of policing departments including response, CID and neighbourhood policing teams. The force also has many dedicated specialist departments providing a county-wide service.

The Constabulary has strong partnerships with local, regional and national agencies and organisations to ensure people residing in or visiting Cumbria are provided the best possible service.

The Constabulary is a leader in innovation and continuously seeks for new ways to further improve the service provided to communities.
