What you'll be doing:



We are seeking an experienced and analytical Commercial Financial Controller to join our finance team in the North. This position is a varied and hands-on role.



The Commercial Financial Controller reports to the Commercial Finance Director & will play an integral part in driving business performance by delivering insightful financial analysis and decision support. This role will be a true business partner to the Head of Operations North and Sales team, the role is part of the North Senior leadership team, as well as the Commercial Finance Senior Leadership Team.



A multifaceted role requiring a range of skills and experience providing Systems support, Reporting, Analysis, Management Accounts, Forecasts & Budgets and business cases for strategic projects. The role holder will have the Commercial Acumen and influence necessary to ensure that business performance is optimised.



You will manage and develop a team of 5 Management Accountants who will prepare the Management accounts for the 10 Commercial depots within the region (turnover of £125m) and also support them in business partnering with their relevant Business Managers. The role will supervise their team to ensure efficiency, accuracy, business process improvements, and the personal development of the team.



The Financial Controller is responsible for monitoring & presenting financial performance to the MD & FD, analysing key financial data, focused support on financial ratio analysis and providing valuable insights and recommendations to senior management for informed decision-making.



You will lead the team with the production of monthly management accounts to ensure that they are delivered to tight deadlines together with sound analysis and investigation of results and variances for a number of operational units, as well as consolidating and summarising results for the region. There will be the need for site visits and interaction with operations / business unit managers to ensure accurate financial reporting and support business development. You will also review & approve balance sheet reconciliations, as well as supporting the external audit process. There will also be a requirement for you to carry out analysis of capex and preparation of business cases along with any ad hoc project work as is necessary to support the business objectives.



You will collaborate with other departments (Sales, Fleet & Digital) to develop annual budgets & Forecasts, track operating expenses, and monitor debtors & accrued income. A key aspect of the role is to assess and highlight to senior managers the risks and opportunities within the region & collaborate with them on potential solutions to mitigate the risks and seize the opportunities.



Responsibilities


  • Prepare monthly management reports, consolidate results, and operational metrics for the commercial business units
  • Conduct financial analysis, modelling, and forecasting to support commercial decision making
  • Manage the annual budgeting process and track performance against budgets for commercial units
  • Analyse product/service pricing, margins, costs, and profitability
  • Identify opportunities to improve commercial financial performance and operational efficiencies
  • Liaise with commercial teams to understand business drivers and provide financial insight
  • Ensure compliance with financial policies, procedures, and controls
  • Assist with financial planning, reporting, and ad-hoc analysis as required
  • Lead & develop the team



What we're looking for:

  • A qualified ACA/ACCA or CIMA Accountant, experience in management accounting & managing/leading a team is essential.
  • This role requires heavy use of data and therefore requires a technologically minded individual able to scrutinise data, any exposure to WORKDAY, Power BI, ADAPTIVE INSIGHTS & WIMS highly desirable
  • An inquiring and analytical mind, and be able to demonstrate good attention to detail
  • A strong commercial acumen
  • Strong interpersonal skills are required to liaise confidently with other parts of the Business
  • An individual with excellent communication and interpersonal skills to provide industry-leading customer service to all internal and external customers.
