HIGHLAND YOUTH CONVENER | NEACH-GAIRM ÒIGRIDH

 12-month contract, working from home (laptop and smartphone provided)

 £22,113 annual bursary, a full-time role from August 2024 for a one-year term. The post requires some evening and weekend work and travel to attend and represent the views of young people at meetings and events as appropriate.

 We are looking for the Highlands’ next Youth Convener. You will help make the Highlands the best place in Scotland to be young by ensuring that the voice of young people in Highland is heard on issues and developments that impact them. You’ll work with the High Life Highland Youth Services Team in developing Highland Youth Parliament and other initiatives that increase youth involvement in decisions that affect them. You’ll be a key representative of young people in Highland at various Highland Council and other committee meetings.

You should be aware of a spectrum of issues affecting a wide range of young people and be able to represent their views. You will be a good communicator–speaker/facilitator/writer, with the ability to work with and relate to a wide range of people and organisations (See Contract Specification attached).

Bursary Award (12-month contract), £22,113 per annum

Bursary Outcomes:

To assist in ensuring that young people’s views in Highland are being voiced in partnership with High Life Highland, The Highland Council and Community Planning Partners.

To act as a representative for young people and Highland Youth Parliament in various council and public meetings discussing issues, policies and developments which have an impact on young people. 

To contribute towards making the Highlands the best place in Scotland to be young.

To work for a good quality of life for young people and maximum availability of services for young people’s personal, social and educational development.

MAIN SERVICES REQUIRED

1. To assist in the implementation of High Life Highland’s Youth Work Policy, and Highland Council’s integrated Children’s Plan, by providing input on youth issues to the Education and  Learning Service and Community Planning Partners.
2. To be a consistent link for members and officials to seek young people’s views (via the High Life Highland Youth Services Team).
3. To assist in the development of Highland Youth Parliament and other strategic youth participation mechanisms, working with the High Life Highland Youth Services Team.
4. To help in ensuring that the views of those young people in need or at risk of exclusion are being represented.
5. To attend and represent the views of young people at council meetings including Full Council, Education Committee and other committees and events as appropriate. Occasionally, giving presentations.
6. To attend and represent the views of young people and learn of issues, policy and developments within High Life Highland, The Highland Council and Community Planning Partner meetings. 
7. To engage with partner organisations to ensure the involvement of young people in decision making processes affecting provision for young people.
8. To actively support other initiatives that engage    young people and involve them in the decision-making processes in civic life, policy and service development. E.g. local youth forums/projects. 
9. Participate in press and radio interviews when required.

Other Duties:

The role, by its nature, requires a flexible approach and therefore it is likely that the Youth Convener may be asked to perform duties other than those given in the Contract Specification. The role may vary from time to time without changing the general character of the duties or the level of responsibility entailed. Such variations are a common occurrence and would not in themselves justify reconsideration of the bursary.
