Specialist Nurse prescriber – Weight Management / Obesity

Cambridgeshire

Part Time Role. £40,000 - £45,000 pro rata.

An exciting opportunity is available for a specialist nurse prescriber with experience in weight management and obesity.

We would like to hear from you if you are:

  • An experienced specialist Nurse with well-developed skills in delivering and leading community-based obesity treatment services to a high standard.
  • Independent Nurse Prescriber with clinical expertise in Non-medical Independent Prescribing, assessment and treatment.
  • Ability to work with a high degree of autonomy with patients who may have complex needs.
  • Strong outcome focus and able to deliver effective, patient centred interventions.
  • Experience in delivering evidence-based health improvement and public health programmes within community weight management services.
  • Experience in working as part of an MDT and in partnership with external organisations.
  • Experienced in electronic record keeping, data collection, collation, and reporting.

Specialist Nurse prescriber – Weight Management/Obesity

JOB DESCRIPTION

 

MAIN PURPOSE

 

To work autonomously, managing a caseload of patients within the community Tier 3 adult weight management specialist service, whilst working as part of the multidisciplinary team, delivering individualised and personalised direct patient care.

To lead on medical pathways involving the prescription of pharmacotherapy for weight loss.

 

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

 

  • Be responsible for screening, assessing and care planning for patients in the specialty.
  • Take the clinical lead on prescribing pharmacotherapy for patients who are eligible and provide consultative patient care for individuals on medication-based weight management pathways.
  • Develop and run nurse led clinics where the post holder will co-ordinate the treatment in conjunction with medical staff and provide treatment which may include prescribing of weight loss medication.
  • Act as an advocate for patients within the service, to ensure a patient orientated approach to the delivery of care and to meet standards within the relevant guidelines.
  • Ensure that patients receive high quality, evidence informed clinical care and have excellent patient experiences, with regard for their customs, cultural and religious beliefs and doctrines.
  • Actively engage service users through the facilitation of online user groups.
  • Direct, support and advise the weight management clinical teams, by the provision of specialist knowledge and advice in the care of patients within the area. This may include provision of in-house updates and training in area of expertise.
  • Participate in the promotion of patient centred care, and establish and maintain a supportive relationship with the patient and their family during the period of assessment, treatment and after care
  • Support and enable patients and carers to make informed decisions relating to their treatment and management.
  • Promote high quality clinical care, and assist in the development of the specialist service, using evidence-based practice and clinical standards
  • Provide professional and clinical leadership and expertise in the speciality and to act as a resource for education and clinical expertise.
  • Act as a role model, demonstrating high standards of care and providing clinical leadership in the specialist areas.
  • Establish, develop, and maintain effective working relationship between clinicians, practitioners, and managers within the wider public health workforce.
  • Actively participate in local, national and international networking and CPD to maintain and develop expert level of knowledge in the specialty.

 

PERSON SPECIFICATION

1. QUALIFICATIONS and EXPERIENCE

  • NMC Registered Nurse
  • Independent Nurse prescriber - V300
  • Public Health or Specialist related degree
  • Evidence of ongoing CPD relevant to the post.
  • Experience working in weight management services.

 

  • Master’s degree (Desirable)
  • Community nursing experience. (Desirable)

3.KNOWLEDGE

 

  • Clinical knowledge of weight management interventions, care, and support.
  • Understanding of the complex and multifactorial nature of tackling obesity including how medication and medical conditions may impact weight.
  • Up to date knowledge of medical interventions supporting weight management.
  • Understand the role of members of the MDT in preparing wrap around patient care.

 

4. EXPERIENCE

 

  • An experienced specialist Nurse with experience in delivering and leading community-based adult obesity prevention and treatment services to a high quality.
  • Oversight of evidence-based health improvement and public health programmes within weight management services for community-based service users.
  • Experienced in data collection, collation, interpretation and reporting.
  • Utilise research findings in the delivery of specialist patient care, developing new ways of working and disseminating relevant information to staff.
  • In conjunction with the other multidisciplinary colleagues, provide monthly reports of case mix, work load and education activity.
  • Provide cover for the other Clinical Nurse Specialist as appropriate.
  • Develop policies, protocols and clinical guidelines in support of the specialist service.
  • Provide specialist education to members of the clinical team, which facilitates learning and individual personal development.

 

 

 

5. SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Enhanced DBS required
  • Act in accordance with the Nursing & Midwifery Council Code of Professional Conduct and Scope of Professional Practice and be accountable for his/her actions at all times.
  • Maintain up-to-date records. Ensuring that confidentiality is respected and that the standards for “Record Keeping” are met.
  • The post holder is required to follow company policies and procedures which are regularly updated.
  • Assess own educational needs and take steps to keep up to date with clinical and nursing developments in line with requirements of the Nursing & Midwifery Council
