SERFCA

Description

Our commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant

To be an enduring, essential pillar in the delivery of support for the well-being of Reserves & Cadets (RF&C) and, through our effectiveness and position in the regions, to be the independent body that represents their interests and promotes understanding between the Armed Forces and civil society.

About us

SERFCA is an ‘arms length body’ of the Ministry of Defence (MoD), established by Act of Parliament and charged with giving advice and assistance to the Defence Council and to the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force on matters that concern reserves and cadets in the South East of England.

Established in 1908 as Territorial Associations (TAFAs) by Lord Haldane, Secretary of State for War, RFCAs were originally designed to provide local support to the Territorial Force in every county in the United Kingdom.  in 1967, the Territorial Associations were merged into 14 regions and retitled Territorial, Auxiliary and Volunteer Reserve Associations (TAVRAs) and in 2000, renamed as Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Associations (RFCAs) and reduced to 13 to bring them more in line with the Army Brigade areas of responsibility.

Whilst the number of Associations has drastically reduced since its inception over a century ago, our dependency and influence has grown to encompass reserves and cadets of all three services and to the employers of reservists.
